Final e-Journal: My PTC Sojourn

Looking back to where it all started

I have never imagined that fate will bring me to the world of teaching. As a Food Technology graduate, I was supposed to be working in the food industry or food research institutions. I tried once before, but it did not give me the satisfaction I was looking for. I thought "maybe in public service... in serving the people". I joined our Local Government Unit in 2008. The next two years, I have worked as a staff in the Mayor's Office, and in 2010 I passed the Civil Service Professional Eligibility exam and got a plantilla position (Nutrition Officer I) the following year.

With a security of tenure, I thought I am about to settle with my job then. But the local politics hit me and made me realized I that my working environment was not healthy for me, both personally and professionally. So I resigned.

Luckily, I was offered a job in a small private school as Administrative Division Chief. That was my first experience working in an educational institution. Most of my friends are teachers and since my move to the school, they have been encouraging me to try teaching. But I refused even the thought of it. Until one day, the School Principal, who is a close friend, asked me a favor and that is to be a substitute teacher for three days until they have found a replacement for the teacher who resigned due to health problems. I was really anxious about it, but then I said... "call of duty to the school."

First day of my substitution job, I kinda felt excited for real. For certain reasons, I have prepared my lessons ahead, went to school an hour earlier, and brought a packed lunch (so that I could eat with the students... they said it was fun). After three days... I did not just have fun. I have found my "calling"... the "satisfaction" I have been craving for so long.

I immediately told my friends "guys, I want to teach." And they told me to get education units from a local college. I told them "I want some challenges" that is why I looked up at UPOU's website if they are offering teaching certification - and yes they do! I got enrolled in 2017.

While taking first few units for my PTC, my friends gave me the brilliant idea of applying for a Senior High School teaching position since it will not require me to have a license yet. Motivated by my new found calling... I applied and luckily with a little help from my former high school teachers (who are now school heads in different schools), I've made it through and got hired on the same year.

Three years have passed and I am still learning big time - from my experience in the public school, interactions/collaborations with friends and colleagues, and of course from all the subjects I have taken here for the PTC. I felt very privileged that I have been given the chance to apply immediately in my teaching job all the things that I have been learning here in UPOU since day one. Reciprocally, my teaching job has provided me with a concrete venue to apply and test all the theories and principles in education, teaching, learning, curriculum development, basic guidance, and assessment.

I might be ending my PTC journey with EDS 131, but I believe the learning will continue for as long as I believe that I will always be "a work in progress". This has been ERSAN A. RESURRECCION, Student Number 2001-12079, UPD CHE BSFT Batch 2008,  UPOU PTC Batch 2016-3T... a teacher... a public servant... saying happy learning everyone and God bless us all!
